Day 12: Snowed In

Day 12: Snowed In, originally uploaded by Anomalily.

We got snowed into the house again- the snow is 7" deep now and it's only 18 degrees. I only ventured out of the house twice today, once to go to the coffeeshop with my housemates (spiked hot chocolate!) and another time to go to the grocery store for dinner supplies. I nearly froze my toes off due to inadequate, hole-ridden shoes.

I wanted to take a picture outside but I simply didn't have it in me to stay outside any longer.

When is this snow going to stop!?

Day 9: Snowing Again

Day 9: Snowing Again, originally uploaded by Anomalily.

Had a job interview today (it went well) thus had to bike in the slushy icemonster snow storm AND look "together". Ended up changing out of my rain pants in the Fred Meyer bathroom down the street from my interview.

Everything is closed because they over-predicted the snow accumulation. Except the IPRC, which I am currently staffing.

The Beginnings of the Home Dome

Posted by anomalily Tue, 21 Oct 2008 22:34:00 GMT

I took time off from work, put in notice at my house with its ever-rising costs and concocted this crazy idea that I would build a house out of wood, hay and yard signs in just a few short weeks.

I finished the dome in the middle of November. The insulation is made of bubble wrap and recycled packing materials, the outside is made of yard signs (no endorsement implied or expressed) and mattress bags. The flooring is made of used cedar flooring & barn doors from the Rebuilding Center. The internal walls are made of cardboard. Finn Po made the wooden frame out of old packing crates & PVC and helped me set it up.

The dome is heated with a wee space heater and the electricity is a mere extension cord. The diameter is 10' and most normal-sized adults can stand up in the interior. The five windows are double wrapped with the plastic stuff used for weatherproofing glass windows.

The coolest part of making this was definitely getting to use power tools in skirts.

This is an evolving project. Top priorities are:
-building a better door (current door a comforter)
-insulating the lower walls
-shingling with metal roofing
-painting the ugly signs

My zine (tentatively titled "Dome Home Fun Time") will be coming out in Feb '09.
